It’s Saturday, and I’ve just finished my spin class. Emerging from the cocoon that is the spin room. I love coming here…it’s like a studio/small theater that’s set up just for spin class. The bikes are all set up facing the front where the teachers bike is located. Each row sits a little higher (like a Broadway theater) so you feel like you have the best seat for the show. Although, at most shows you don’t work this hard or sweat this much!
Today’s teacher is a super fit brunette with just enough spunk to push to you to work harder without being annoying. The teachers here make up a new song playlist for each class, so you’ll never hear the same mix twice. Today we have a little hip hop and some old school rock n’ roll. The old school rock n’ roll suits me perfectly. I never get tired of some Def Leppard ” Pour Some Sugar on Me” , my legs seem to get a new push of energy .
When the music starts, the lights get dimmed and it’s quasi dark…for the next hour you let everything else go, and focus on riding, and working hard, and sweating.
I love it! It’s energizing and exhausting all at the same time.
Something puzzling happens every week at the end of class. As people leave the spin studio, literally still steaming ( it’s cold in Seattle these days) warm bodies + cold air = bodies looking like they are on fire. A certain number of these steaming bodies walk right next door to the donut shop?? huh?? O.K….I’m not judging ( well maybe a little) I just feel like if you’re going to work that hard, why not replenish your body with some good nutrients.
Luckily, just another half block down the street is Juju Beet, a fresh juice place . I love Juju Beet. Just saying Juju Beet …you cant help but smile. I always get the ” Liver Purifier” . I’m pretty sure I first got this delicious beet concoction just because it was called the “Liver Purifier”,and I’m pretty sure I was hoping it would somehow magically neutralize the wine I so much like to drink! In any case,I get it now because I crave it! It is a super nutrient dense juice and I look forward to it as my reward after a hard work out.
I crave it so much, that I’ve started making it at home as well. It’s a yummy blend of beets, cucumber, carrot, celery, chard, dandelion, and lemon. Which means that in addition to being a great tonic for the liver and the blood, it’s chock full of potassium, magnesium, fiber, iron, and vitamin A, B & C. Every cell in your body with thank you for fueling up on this juice.
Oh, and did you know beets contain betain, which is the same substance that is used in certain treatments of depression. So there you go…the moral of it all ..Beets make you happy! Juju beet and the “Liver Purifier” both make me very happy:)
(i’m not affiliated with juju beet, i just really love their juice!)
